Rangoli Art

Last night we had our Junior Art Exhibition.

We did Rangoli art which is celebrated during the Indian festival of Diwali.

Diwali is the Indian Festival of Light.

It is held in late October or early November and celebrates the beginning of the Indian New Year.

The celebrations last for five days.

During the first day of Diwali Rangoli patterns are made.

These are put by the front door to welcome visitors.

Sweets are also made and given out to family and friends.

On the third day, divas are lit and put around your home. These are little lights. Later in the evening, fireworks are lit.

The fourth day is New Year's Day.

 The last day of Diwali is Bhai Beej.

This is a special day for brothers and sisters.

After the five days the New Year has begun.

Rangoli Process

To get the idea of colours and patterns we all had the same pattern but chose different colours to see what looks best together.

Then we all drew the same shape. This was the hardest part as our left and right brains had to do some serious thinking!

Then we coloured in our rangoli pattern.

After many practises, when we were happy with the shape and size, we drew our pattern on to plates.

Lastly, we used coloured salt to fill in our shapes.

Maui and the Sun.

   We have been looking at Maori Myths. One story we read was about  Maui and how he and his brothers slowed the sun down so the days could be longer.

 

 One day a long time ago, Maui and his brothers pulled the sun down. AC

Maui caught the sun to slow it down. VL

Maui and his brothers wanted to capture the sun because he was racing across the sky. RL

I watched the story of Maui and the sun. Maui caught the sun with ropes. AJ

Maui's brothers said the day was too dark so they are making ropes to slow the sun. They are pulling the ropes. Maui and his brothers said that's better. NM

Maui pulled the sun because the night is too long. So he caught the sun. AW
