Today we visited Te Tahawai Marae in Pakuranga.
We were very fortunate to have four senior students to help us. CP and RP did the Karanga, and JS and CD did the Whaikorero inside the wharenui.
Whaea O'Shea greeted us before we entered the marae.

Once the Powhiri was over, we went into the wharekai and did some art using kowhawhai patterns to show our family.
When we finished, Whaea O'Shea showed us how to poi.
We loved doing the poi!
We also sang some waiata.
Then we went into the wharenui and learnt about the carvings Poupou along the walls. These are carvings of Maori ancestors. We were not allowed to touch the tukutuku but we were allowed to touch the carvings.
We got to draw the carvings on to outlines of the Poupou.
Mrs A was able to reconnect with her past.
It was a very valuable trip to our local marae.
We are now Tangatawhenua of Te Tahawai Marae.
