Rangoli Art

Last night we had our Junior Art Exhibition.

We did Rangoli art which is celebrated during the Indian festival of Diwali.

Diwali is the Indian Festival of Light.

It is held in late October or early November and celebrates the beginning of the Indian New Year.

The celebrations last for five days.

During the first day of Diwali Rangoli patterns are made.

These are put by the front door to welcome visitors.

Sweets are also made and given out to family and friends.

On the third day, divas are lit and put around your home. These are little lights. Later in the evening, fireworks are lit.

The fourth day is New Year's Day.

 The last day of Diwali is Bhai Beej.

This is a special day for brothers and sisters.

After the five days the New Year has begun.

Rangoli Process

To get the idea of colours and patterns we all had the same pattern but chose different colours to see what looks best together.

Then we all drew the same shape. This was the hardest part as our left and right brains had to do some serious thinking!

Then we coloured in our rangoli pattern.

After many practises, when we were happy with the shape and size, we drew our pattern on to plates.

Lastly, we used coloured salt to fill in our shapes.
